CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Virginia Tech posted a three-round total of 1-over 841 and finished second at the season-opening Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Tuesday afternoon. The event was played at the 6,345-yard, par 70 Berry Hill Country Club in Charleston, West Virginia.
The Hokies shot a 276 and 278 in the first two round, played on Monday. Tech shot 287 in Tuesday’s final round.
Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, finished tied for third individually in his first collegiate event. His 5-under 205 was two strokes behind Erik Lindwall of Eastern Kentucky, the tournament’s medalist.
Mark Lawrence Jr., tied for fifth place at 3-under 207. The Richmond, Virginia native, a sophomore transfer from Auburn, was playing in his first event as a Hokie. Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, finished in 14th place at 1-over 216 and Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 36th at 218. Ian Hildebrand, a junior from Purcellville, Virginia, tied for 72nd at 229.
Two Hokies played the tournament as individuals. Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, was the low scorer out of the 16 players who competed as individuals. Yates tied for seventh at 2-under 208. Tanner Owens, a freshman from Milton, Tennessee, tied for 36th at 218.
Eastern Kentucky won the team title in the 16-team event at 7-under 833, eight strokes ahead of the Hokies. Dayton was third at 843, host Marshall was forth at 854 and Bowling Green was fifth at 856.
Tech is back on the course next Monday and Tuesday, as they compete in the Janney VCU Invitational at the Country Club of Virginia’s Tuckahoe Creek Course in Richmond, Virginia.
