CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot a two-round total of 6-under 554 and is two strokes behind leader Eastern Kentucky after the first day at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Monday. The two-day event is being played at the 6,345-yard, par 70 Berry Hill Country Club in Charleston, West Virginia.
The Hokies held the lead following the morning round at 4-under 276. Tech followed that with a 2-under 278 in the afternoon round.
Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, made an impressive debut in his first collegiate event. He has the two-round lead at 9-under 131, one stroke ahead of Erik Lindwall of Eastern Kentucky. Suwannarut posted a 6-under 64 in his first collegiate round, including an eagle on his fourth collegiate hole.
Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, is tied for 10th individually, with a 1-under 139. The transfer from Auburn is also making his Virginia Tech debut. Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 16th place at 141. Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, is tied for 25th at 143 and Ian Hildebrand is tied for 66th at 152.
Two Hokies are playing the event as individuals. Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, is tied with Lawrence for 10th place at 139. Tanner Owens, a freshman from Milton, Tennessee, is tied for 33rd at 145. Yates is the low individual competitor and Owens is third.
Eastern Kentucky leads the Hokies by two strokes and Dayton by 12 strokes. Host Marshall is fourth at 566 and Bowling Green rounds out the top five at 574.
The final round will be played Tuesday morning.
