BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech golfer Joey Lane won the 103rd annual Virginia State Golf Association Amateur title at the VSGA’s premier five-day event held this past week at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech.
Lane defeated former University of Virginia golfer Ji Soo Park 8 and 6 in Saturday’s 36-hole match-play final. The rising senior from Great Falls, Virginia led 7-up after the first 18 holes and never looked back in cruising to the title.
Lane became the second consecutive Virginia Tech golfer to win the event. Last summer, recent graduate Maclain Huge captured the title at Farmington Country Club outside of Charlottesville, Virginia.
Lane captured medalist honors Wednesday after shooting a two-round total 3-under-par. The first two rounds, held this past Tuesday and Wednesday, were a stroke play format, with the 32 best scores advancing to match play in the event. Lane then won four times in match play to advance to the final, a stretch that included a 2 and 1 win over future teammate Mark Lawrence, Jr., who is transferring to Tech from Auburn University.
Lane became the first medalist to win the event since Billy Hurley did both in 2004 at Roanoke Country Club in Roanoke, Virginia. Hurley, who recently won his first PGA Tour event, beat former Tech golfer Ryan Stinnett 4 and 2 that year.
Lane, Hurley, and Lanny Wadkins are the only medalists to win the event since 1970.
