GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech golfer Joey Lane has been named to the 2016 All-ACC Academic Team, as announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference on Tuesday.
Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia., makes the team for the first time in his career. He led the Hokies in scoring average, at 72.23 and in final round scoring average, at 72.55. He had a team-high seven top 20 finishes this season, highlighted by fourth-place finishes at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate and the Kiawah Classic in the Fall. Lane posted a career-best seventh place finish at the ACC Men’s Golf Championship in the spring. In May, he competed in the NCAA Franklin Regional as an independent, finishing 55th overall.
Ten league programs are represented on the academic team, led by Duke with five honorees.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters. Clemson’s Stephen Behr won the award this season, now know as the Rod Myers Scholar-Athlete of the Year, named after the late Duke coach.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
