FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Virginia Tech golfer Joey Lane shot a 1-over par 73 and is tied for 32nd place at the NCAA Franklin Regional after the first round of competition. The three-day event is being played at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville. The Tom Kite/Bob Cupp-designed North Course is a par 72, 7190-yard layout.
Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, posted two birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 1-under. After struggling in the opening holes of the back nine, Lane recorded an eagle-3 on the par-five 527-yard No. 18 to finish the first round at 1-over.
Lane is sixth among 10 individuals competing in the event. He trails individual leader Doug Ghim of Texas by nine strokes. This is Lane’s third trip to the NCAAs in as many seasons at Tech.
The top five teams, plus the top individual not on an advancing team, will move on to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship in Eugene, Oregon at the end of the month.
Texas leads the team portion of the event. The Longhorns posted a 20-under 268 and leads East Carolina by 11 strokes.
