Joey Lane earns NCAA berth
Junior golfer to compete in Franklin Regional

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Virginia Tech men’s golfer Joey Lane has been selected to compete in the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship’s Franklin Regional, as announced this morning by the NCAA.

Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, was one of a total of 45 individuals selected for six NCAA regional sites. There are 81 teams competing for the team title this season. He is the seventh-seed out of 10 individuals in Franklin. The top five teams and the top individual not on an advancing team will qualify for the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship finals in Eugene, Oregon.

“I’m really excited to participate in the regionals,” Lane said. “I wish my teammates could be there with me, but I’m proud to be able to represent Virginia Tech in this prestigious event. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

The Franklin Regional will be played May 16-18 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville. The Tom Kite/Bob Cupp-designed North Course is a par 72, 7190-yard layout.

“Receiving an individual bid to the NCAA Regional is a just reward for Joey’s outstanding season,” said head men’s golf coach Jay Hardwick. “I couldn’t be more pleased for him and the progress he has made. Since entering our program in the fall of 2013, he has made tremendous strides improving from a part-time starter to our number-one player and his solid play this season is certainly deserving of post-season recognition. He has been an excellent leader on and off the course, and it is exciting that he will continue to represent his teammates and Virginia Tech at the highest level.”

This is Lane’s third appearance in the NCAA championship, but first as an individual. Last season, Lane and the Hokies competed in the Noblesville Regional at the Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana. The Hokies were an at-large selection in the 2014 Auburn Regional and advanced to the NCAA Championship at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
