UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 44-over 896 and finished in ninth place at the Rutherford Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon. The two-day event was played at the 7,202-yard, par 71 Blue Course at the Penn State Golf Courses in University Park, Pennsylvania.
The Hokies shot 298 in Saturday’s morning round and 299 in the afternoon round. The first round was delayed one hour due to frost conditions. On Sunday, the Hokies shot 299, after the final round was delayed 30 minutes due to frost.
Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia tied for 15th at 4-over 217. He shot an even-par 71 on Sunday and finished 14 strokes behind medalist Charles Huntzinger of Penn State.
Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettesvile, Virginia, tied for 31st place at 223 and Ryan Mondy, a junior from Blacksburg tied for 50th at 228. Drew Johnson, a junior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina tied for 56th at 230 and Ian Hildebrand, a sophomore from Purcellville, Virginia was 59th at 233.
Host Penn State defended its title with a 9-under 843, defeating runner-up West Virginia by 10 strokes and Xavier by 18 strokes. UConn was fourth at 862, Rutgers was fifth at 864 and Eastern Michigan was sixth at 877. Georgetown and Seton Hall tied for seventh at 885, 11 strokes ahead of the Hokies. Youngstown State was 10th at 900 and Binghamton was 11th at 920.
The Hokies return to action on Friday, as they compete in the 2016 ACC Men’s Golf Championship, to be played at the Old North State Club in New London, North Carolina.
