Blacksburg, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team will close out the regular season this weekend, competing in the 2016 Rutherford Intercollegiate. The two-day event will be played at the 7,202-yard, par 71 Blue Course at the Penn State Golf Courses in University Park, Pennsylvania.
The 54-hole event will boast an 11-team field. The Hokies have two victories in the 39-year history of the Rutherford. Defending champion and tournament host Penn State returns to the tournament, as do runner-up Eastern Michigan, 2015 third place Rutgers and 2015 fourth place Georgetown. One of last season’s co-medalists, Sam Madsen of Georgetown, will return to defend his title.
Tech will go with a starting line-up of Joey Lane, Maclain Huge, Ryan Mondy, Drew Johnson and Ian Hildebrand. Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, has been the Hokies’ most consistent player this season. He has two top 5, two top 10 and one top 20 finish so far in this season, including an eighth place finish at the Furman Intercollegiate. Huge posted a top 20 finish in the Hokies’ most recent event, the 3M Augusta Invitational two weeks ago.
The event begins with a practice round on Friday. Teams will play 36 holes on Saturday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Hokies are grouped with the Nittany Lions and UConn and will tee off beginning at 8:15 a.m. The final round will be played Sunday morning. There will be no live scoring available. This is the Hokies’ final event prior to next week’s 2016 ACC Men’s Golf Championship.
