AUGUSTA, Ga. – Virginia Tech shot a three-round total of 889 and finished 14th at the 3M Augusta Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The two-day event was played at the 7,005-yard, par 72 Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
Tech shot an even-par 288 in Saturday’s morning round and followed that with a 9-over 297 in the afternoon round. Tech shot 304 in Sunday’s final round.
Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettesville, Virginia, posted a three-round total of 1-under 215 and tied for 20th place. He finished 10 strokes behind medalist Beau Hossler of Texas, the nation’s top player. Huge shot a 3-under 68 on Sunday.
Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 41st place at 221 and Ryan Mondy, a junior from Blacksburg, Virginia, tied for 64th place at 229. Drew Johnson, a junior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, finished in 70th place at 231 and Blake Fiest, a freshman from Huntersville, North Carolina, tied for 71st at 232.
Illinois, ranked fourth nationally, shot a final round 12-under 271 and claimed the team title at 27-under 837, three strokes ahead of second-ranked Texas and nine strokes ahead of host Augusta. Georgia, ranked third nationally, was fourth at 854, USF was fifth at 856, New Mexico was sixth at 862 and Tennessee and Houston tied for seventh at 868. Kennesaw State was ninth at 870, Coastal Carolina and Pepperdine tied for 10th at 876, UCF was 12th at 880 and USC-Aiken was 13th at 883, six strokes ahead of the Hokies.
The Hokies will return to action on April 16-17, as they travel to State College, Pennsylvania to complete in the Rutherford Invitational, hosted by Penn State.
