AUGUSTA, Ga. – Virginia Tech posted a two-round total of 9-over 585 and is in 13th place after the first day at the 3M Augusta Invitational. The two-day event is being played at the 7,005-yard, par 72 Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
Tech shot an even-par 288 in the morning round and followed that with a 9-over 297 in the afternoon round. The morning’s first round was delayed more than an hour due to adverse course conditions.
Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 33rd place at 1-over 145. He trails leader Beau Hossler of Texas, the nation’s top player, by nine strokes.
Ryan Mondy, a junior from Blacksburg, Virginia and Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettesville, Virginia, are tied for 43rd place at 147. Blake Fiest, a freshman from Huntersville, South Carolina, is tied for 53rd at 149 and Drew Johnson, a junior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina is in 69th place at 153.
Host Augusta holds the tournament lead after Saturday’s play, posting an 18-under 558, three strokes ahead of Texas and Illinois. South Florida is fourth at 562, Georgia is fifth at 569, New Mexico and Tennessee are tied for sixth at 572 and Kennesaw State and Pepperdine are tied for eighth at 576. Houston is 10th at 577, Coastal Carolina is 11th at 581 and UCF is 12th at 583, two strokes ahead of the Hokies.
The final round will be played Sunday morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m., with tee times from No. 1 and No. 10. Competing teams are allowed access to Monday’s practice round at the Masters. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com and a link from Hokiesports.com
