Blacksburg, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team has a quick turnaround, as they will compete in the 3M Augusta Inviational on Saturday and Sunday. The two-day event will be played at the 7,005-yard, par 72 Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
The 54-hole event, hosted by Augusta University traditionally draws one of the top fields in collegiate golf. This year’s 15-team event boasts two of the semifinalists from last season’s NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship. Three of the top four teams in the current Golfstat.com rankings, No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Georgia and No. 4 Illinois, are in this weekend’s field, along with No. 14 South Florida, No. 32 Houston and No. 35 Augusta. Defending champion, New Mexico, is also in the field. Lee McCoy of Georgia, who won the tournament last season, returns to defend his title this season.
Tech will go with a starting line-up of Joey Lane, Drew Johnson, Ryan Mondy, Maclain Huge and Blake Fiest. Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, has been the Hokies’ most consistent player this season. He has two top 5, two top 10 and one top 20 finish so far in his junior season, including an eighth place finish last week at the Furman Intercollegiate.
The event begins with a practice round on Friday. Teams will play 36 holes on Saturday, with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start. The final round will be played Sunday morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m., with tee times from No. 1 and No. 10. Competing teams are allowed access to Monday’s practice round at the Masters. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com and a link from Hokiesports.com.
