GREENVILLE, S.C. – Virginia Tech shot an opening round 4-over 292 and is in 12th place at the Furman Intercollegiate on Friday afternoon. The three-day event is being played at the 6,994-yard, par 72 Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina.
Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, carded a 2-under 70 and is tied for eighth place. He trails co-leaders Andrew Novak of Wofford and Logan Lagodich of Marshall by three strokes.
Juniors Drew Johnson of Oak Ridge, North Carolina and Ryan Mondy of Blacksburg each shot 73 on Friday and are tied for 34th place. Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettesville, Virginia shot a 76 and is tied for 69th and Blake Fiest, a freshman from Huntersville, North Carolina, shot a 77 and is tied for 85th.
Three Hokies are competing as individuals in the tournament. Ian Hildebrand, a sophomore from Purcellville, Virginia, shot 71 and is tied for 18th, Dan Woodbury, a sophomore from Upton, Massachusetts shot a 76 and is tied for 69th and Will Duma, a freshman from Atlanta, Georgia, shot 76 and is tied for 85th.
Harvard posted a 4-under 284 and leads the event by one stroke over Georgia State and four strokes over host Furman. Francis Marion and USC Upstate are tied for fourth at 289 and Chattanooga, USC Aiken, Akron and Dartmouth are tied for sixth at 290. Gardner-Webb and Marshall are tied for 10th, one stroke ahead of the Hokies, who has a three-stroke lead on 13th place Jacksonville.
The tournament will continue with single rounds on Saturday and Sunday. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com and a link from Hokiesports.com
