Blacksburg, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team returns to familiar turf this weekend, as they compete in the 2016 Furman Intercollegiate Golf Tournament. The three-day event will be played at the 6,994-yard, par 72 Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
The 54-hole event, hosted by Furman, has been an annual stop on the Virginia Tech golf schedule. Tech has won the event six times since 2001, most recently tying for team honors in 2014. Individually, four Hokies have claimed medalist honors, most recently Trevor Cone in 2014.
Among the notable players to win the Furman Intercollegiate are Curtis Strange, Jay Haas, Mark Calcavecchia, Brad Faxon, David Duval and Matt Kuchar. Brandon Matthews of Temple, who won the tournament last season, returns to defend his title this season.
Tech will go with a starting line-up of Joey Lane, Maclain Huge, Drew Johnson, Blake Fiest and Ryan Mondy. Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, has been the Hokies’ most consistent player this season. He has two top 5, one top 10 and one top 20 finish so far in his junior season.
Three players, Will Duma, Dan Woodbury and Ian Hildebrand, will play in the event as individuals.
The event begins on Friday morning and the Hokies open play Friday afternoon at 12:20 p.m., grouped with Wofford and USC Aiken. The tournament will continue with single rounds on Saturday and Sunday. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com and a link from Hokiesports.com.
