MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Virginia Tech finished in 14th place at the General Hackler Championship on Sunday afternoon. The 54-hole, two-day event was played at the par-72, 7,233 yard Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The Hokies posted a 297 and 295 on Saturday, before posting a 299 on Sunday for their 891 total. Saturday’s second round was suspended due to darkness and was completed early Sunday morning.
Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettesville, Virginia, shot a 1-under 71 on Sunday and tied for 35th place with a 3-over 219. Matthew NeSmith of South Carolina and Jimmy Stanger of Virginia were co-medalists at 9-under 207.
Ryan Mondy, a junior from Blacksburg, tied for 39th at 220 and Drew Johnson, a junior from Oak Ridge, N.C., finished tied for 57th place at 225. Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 68th place at 230 and Blake Fiest, a freshman from Huntersville, North Carolina, tied for 71st at 232. Ian Hildebrand, a sophomore from Purcellville, Virginia played the tournament as an individual and tied for 75th at 233.
South Carolina took the team title with a 23-under 841, seven strokes ahead of runner-up Virginia. Kent State was third at 852, North Carolina was fourth at 855 and NC State was fifth at 857. The Hokies finished one stroke behind host Coastal Carolina and Chattanooga.
The Hokies return to action March 25-27, as they return to the Furman Intercollegiate, to be played at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina.
