RIO MAR, Puerto Rico – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 898 and finished in 15th place at the Puerto Rico Classic on Tuesday. The 15-team, three-day event was played at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa’s 6,945-yard, par 72 River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The Hokies shot a 14-over 302 on Sunday and followed with a 301 on Monday. In the final round on Tuesday, Tech posted a 7-over 295.
Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 19th place individually at 2-under 214. He shot a 1-under 71 on Sunday, followed that with a 1-over 73 on Monday and completed the tournament with a 2-under 70. Alabama’s Robby Shelton claimed medalist honors at 11-under 205.
Drew Johnson, a junior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, tied for 58th place at 227 and Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettesville, Virginia, tied for 63rd at 229. Ryan Monday, a junior from Blacksburg, Virginia, tied for 66th place at 232 and Blake Fiest, a freshman from Huntersville, North Carolina, tied for 71st place at 234.
Alabama led all three rounds en route to its fifth Puerto Rico Classic championship. The Crimson Tide posted a 25-under 839 and defeated runner-up Clemson by nine strokes and third place Georgia, the defending champion, by 12 strokes. Kentucky and North Carolina rounded out the top five. Tech finished five strokes behind Michigan and seven strokes behind UNCG.
The Hokies return to action March 12-13, as they compete in the General Jim Hackler Championship. The two-day tournament will be played at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a Robert Trent Jones Signature course.
