RIO MAR, Puerto Rico – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team remains in 15th place following the second round at the Puerto Rico Classic on Monday morning. The 15-team, three-day event is being played at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa’s 6,945-yard, par 72 River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 32nd individually. He shot a 1-under 71 on Sunday and followed that with a 1-over 73 on Monday. He trails leader Jonathan Hardee of Alabama by seven strokes.
Drew Johnson, a junior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina is tied for 53rd at 150 and Ryan Mondy, a junior from Blacksburg, is tied for 60th at 153. Blake Fiest, a freshman from Huntersville, North Carolina is tied for 68th at 156 and Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettesville, Virginia, is tied for 73rd at 159.
The Hokies shot a 14-over 302 on Sunday and followed with a 301 on Monday. Alabama retains the lead with a two-round total of 563, one stroke better than defending champion Georgia and Clemson. North Carolina is fourth and Georgia Tech, Oklahoma and Kentucky are tied for fifth. The Hokies trail 14th place NC State by 11 strokes and Minnesota and Michigan by 12 strokes.
The event concludes on Tuesday morning with a 7:30 a.m. AST shotgun start. Tech will be grouped with the Wolverines and Wolfpack. Live scoring is available on Birdiefire.com and a link from Hokiesports.com.
