RIO MAR, Puerto Rico. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team is in 15th place following the first round at the Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday. The 15-team, three-day event is being played at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa’s 6,945-yard, par 72 River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 17th individually following Sunday’s play. He shot a 1-under 71. He trails leader Jonathan Hardee of Alabama by four strokes.
Ryan Mondy, a junior from Blacksburg, is tied for 58th at 76 and Drew Johnson, a junior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina is tied for 61st a 77. Blake Fiest, a freshman from Huntersville, North Carolina is tied for 66th at 78 and Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettesville, Virginia, is tied for 70th at 81.
Alabama has the first round lead with a 12-under 276, two strokes ahead of North Carolina. Oklahoma is third at 281, followed by Clemson and defending champion Georgia. The Hokies trail 14th-place Minnesota by three strokes and 12th-place NC State by five strokes.
The 54-hole event, hosted by Purdue, annually attracts one of the top fields in all of collegiate golf. This year’s tournament boasts five of the top 20 teams in the nation, as of the end of the fall season. Defending champion Georgia and four-time tournament champion Alabama are in this year’s field. Tech is one of five ACC teams in the field. All 15 teams are ranked in the top 100 nationally.
The event continues on Monday morning with an 8 a.m. AST shotgun start. Tech will be grouped with the Golden Gophers and Wolfpack. Live scoring is available on Birdiefire.com and a link from Hokiesports.com.
