KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Heavy overnight rain forced the cancellation of the final round on Tuesday of the Kiawah Classic by Aramark. The Virginia Tech men’s golf team had a two-round total of 11-over-par 587 and finished in eighth place at the event.
The tournament was played at the par 72, 7,100-yard Turtle Point Golf Club at the Kiawah Island Resort in South Carolina. More than three inches of rain fell on the resort Monday night and Tuesday morning, eventually making the course unplayable. Although some teams played a limited number of holes on Tuesday morning, the tournament’s final results reverted to the end of the second round. The Hokies shot a 292 on Sunday and followed that with a 295 on Monday.
Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, finished in fourth place overall with a two-round total of 5-under 139. He finished five strokes behind medalist Robin Petersson of Augusta. Lane shot a 69 on Sunday and carded a 2-under 70 on Monday. The finish gives Lane two top five and one top 10 finish in the final three tournaments of the fall schedule. The fourth place finish is tied for his career-best, equally his fourth place finish at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate last month.
Logan Yates, a freshman from Ruckersville, Virginia, tied for 32nd place at 147 and Drew Johnson, a junior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina and Ryan Mondy, a junior from Blacksburg, Virginia, tied for 66th place at 152. Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettesville, Virginia, tied for 103rd place at 159.
Host Charleston Southern was declared champion. They finished 10-under 566, five strokes ahead of Virginia and nine strokes ahead of Duke and Augusta. The College of Charleston was fifth at 579, Georgia Southern was sixth at 581 and Maryland was seventh at 586, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Loyola-Maryland was ninth at 591 and Georgia Tech was 10th at 592. In all, there were 22 teams competing in the tournament.
This was the Hokies’ final event of the fall season. Next up for Tech is the Puerto Rico Classic, to be played Feb. 21-23 at the Rio Mar Country Club in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
