GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 9-over-par 873 and finished in seventh place at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate on Monday afternoon. The 54-hole event, hosted by UNC Greensboro, was played at the par 72, 7,245-yard Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Tech shot identical rounds of 2-over 290 on Sunday under beautiful weather conditions in the Triad area. Monday, the Hokies shot a 5-over 293 in rainy and windy conditions.
Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, led the Hokies with a 3-under 213 and tied for eighth place, 10 strokes behind Austin Eoff of Purdue. Lane three rounds were highlighted by a hole-in-one on the 125-yard, par 3 12th hole in Sunday’s second round. It is his first career ace.
Logan Yates, a freshman from Ruckersville, Virginia, tied for 20th place with a three-round total of 1-over 217. He shot a 3-under 69 in Monday’s final round The 69 was tied for the lowest round of the day.
Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettesville, Virginia and Drew Johnson, a junior from nearby Oak Ridge, North Carolina, tied for 47th place at 224. Blake Fiest, a freshman from Huntersville, North Carolina, tied for 62nd place at 228.
Ryan Mondy, a junior from Blacksburg, Virginia, played the event as an individual. He tied for 16thplace at even-par 216. He shot a 3-under 69 in the opening round and was second lowest among indivduals (those not playing in a school’s starting line-up).
Purdue won the tournament with a 30-under-par834, two strokes ahead of North Carolina. Northwestern and host UNC Greensboro tied for third at 860 and Georgia State was fifth at 866.VCU finished sixth at 869, four strokes ahead of the Hokies and five strokes ahead of eighth place Kansas State. Utah was ninth at 878, Davidson was 10th at 896 and Mercer and Iowa State tied for 11th at 899. Chattanooga was 13th at 901 and South Alabama was 14th at 909.
The Hokies will wrap-up the fall portion of the schedule beginning Sunday, as they travel to Kiawah Island, South Carolina to compete in the CSU Kiawah Classic. The three-day tournament, hosted by Charleston Southern, will be played at the Turtle Point Golf Club, a Jack Nicklas-design course in the Kiawah Island resort.
