Hokies finish 11th at Blackthorn

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Virginia Tech shot a three round total of 7-over-par 871 and finished 11th at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club on Sunday. The tournament was hosted by East Tennessee State at the Blackthorn Club at The Ridges, a par-72, 7,147-yard course in Jonesborough, Tennessee.

The Hokies were tied for the lead following a 1-over 289 in the first round on Friday. They shot a 4-over 292 on Saturday, entering today’s final round in 10th place. Tech shot a final round 2-over-par 290.

Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for fourth place this weekend. The co-leader following the opening round, Lane shot a 5-under 209. He finished two strokes behind medalist Adrian Meronk of East Tennessee State.

Drew Johnson, a junior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, tied for 36th at 216 and Blake Fiest, a freshman from Huntersville, North Carolina finished tied for 42nd at 222. Fiest, who made his collegiate debut in the opener at VCU, was making his first appearance in the Hokies’ starting line-up. Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettsville, Virginia, and Logan Yates, a freshman from Ruckersville, Virginia, tied for 52ndat 223. Yates shot a team-best 1-under 71 on Sunday.

Three Hokies played in the tournament as individuals. Dan Woodbury, a sophomore from Upton, Massachusetts finished in 77th place at 235, Ian Hildebrand, a sophomore from Purcellville, Virginia, was 79that 237 and Will Duma, a freshman from Atlanta, Georgia was 84th at 243.

Penn State won the tournament, leading from wire-to-wire. The Nittany Lions shot 20-under 844, 12 strokes ahead of Louisville and 17 strokes ahead of Tennessee. Virginia was fourth at 864, Missouri was fifth at 865 and Kent State and Charlotte tied for sixth at 867. East Carolina was eighth at 868, VCU was ninth at 869 and host East Tennessee State was 10th at 870, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. UNC Wilmington was 12th at 886, Furman was 13th at 889, Villanova was 14th at 910 and Coastal Carolina was 15th at 922.

The Hokies return to action in two weeks, as they return to the UNCG Bridgestone Invitational. The event will be played Oct. 25-26 at the Grandover Resort, outside of Greensboro, North Carolina.
