JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Virginia Tech shot an opening round total of 1-over-par 289 on Friday and is tied for the lead with Penn State and VCU at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club. The tournament is hosted by East Tennessee State at the Blackthorn Club at The Ridges, a par-72, 7,147-yard course in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, shot a 3-under-69 and is tied for the lead. He birdied four of the first six holes and had five birdies on the day. He is tied with Victor Wiggins of Charlotte.
Blake Fiest, a freshman from Huntersville, North Carolina, is tied for 11th at even-par 72 and Drew Johnson, a junior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, is tied for 22nd at 73. Fiest, who made his collegiate debut in the opener at VCU, is making his first appearance in the Hokies’ starting line-up. Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettsville, Virginia, is tied for 42nd at 75 and Logan Yates, a freshman from Ruckersville, Virginia, is tied for 59th at 77.
Three Hokies are playing in the tournament as individuals. Dan Woodbury, a sophomore from Upton, Massachusetts is tied for 73rd at 80, Ian Hildebrand, a sophomore from Purcellville, Virginia, is 82nd at 86 and Will Duma is 83rd at 93.
Charlotte is fourth at 290, one stroke behind the trio of leaders. Kent State is fifth at 291 and Louisville and East Carolina are tied for sixth at 293. Virginia is eighth at 294 and Missouri and Furman are tied for ninth at 295. Tennessee is 11th at 299, host ETSU is 12th at 303, UNCW is 13th at 304, Villanova is 14th at 309 and Coastal Carolina is 15th at 311.
The tournament will continue with 18 holes on Saturday and the final 18 holes played Sunday morning. Live scoring is available from a link on the main page of Hokiesports.com.
