MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot a two-round total of 15-over-par 591 to finish in seventh place in the Primland Collegiate Invitational. The tournament, in its second year, was hosted by Wake Forest at the par 72, 7,057 yard Primland course at the Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan, Virginia.
The event, originally scheduled for 54 holes, was shortened to 45 holes following a foggy and rainy Monday. When the weather deteriorated further on Tuesday, was cut back to 36 holes.
The Hokies shot a 12-over 300 in Monday’s morning round and followed that with a 3-over 291 in Monday’s afternoon session. Tech and Auburn were the only two teams that were able to finish their second rounds on Monday night, before the event was suspended due to darkness.
Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettesville, Virginia, carded a two-round total of 2-under 142 and finished in a tie for seventh place. Auburn’s Michael Johnson took medalist honors at 15-under129, two strokes ahead of Carter Jenkins of North Carolina.
Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 23rd place at 3-over 147. Drew Johnson, a junior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina and Logan Yates, a freshman from Ruckersville, Virginia, tied for 34th place at 151 and Ryan Mondy, a junior from Blacksburg, Virginia, finished in 42nd place at 153.
North Carolina took home team honors, finishing with an 18-under 558, five strokes better than runner-up Auburn. Host Wake Forest was third at 569, Penn State was fourth at 570 and Pepperdine was fifth at 576. Yale finished sixth at 590, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Loyola of Maryland was eighth at 595 and Davidson was ninth at 604.
The Hokies return to action Oct. 9 through 11, as they travel to the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee to compete in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Blackthorn Club. The three-day tournament will be play at The Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
