Blacksburg, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team travels to Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida to defend their title at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular. The event, hosted by George Mason, will be played on the par 72, 7,001-yard El Campeón Course at the historic Mission Inn Resort and Spa.

The Hokies won the event last season by five strokes over Texas Tech. Trevor Cone took home medalist honors with a two-stroke win over Bryce Chalkley and Adam Ball of VCU. Tech tied for second at the tournament in 2013, as Scott Vincent tied for third place.

Virginia Tech enters the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular following a eighth-place finish at the Puerto Rico Classic. Vincent was co-medalist at the event, earning him ACC Men’s Golfer of the Month for February.

Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, will play in the first position for the Hokies. He is ranked 31st in the current World Amateur Golf Rankings. Vincent set a new Virginia Tech record with three individual tournament titles last season and was the school’s first-ever first-team All-American last season. He is ranked 73rd by Golfweek/Sagarin and 78th by Golfstat.

Cone will play in the second spot for Tech. The senior from Concord, North Carolina won two individual titles last season and is currently ranked 60th in the world, 49th by Golfstats and 60th in Golfweek/Sagarin. He was a third-team All-American a year ago. Cone led the Hokies in scoring in the fall.

Maclain Huge will play in the third position for the Hokies. The junior from Lovettsville, Virginia has played in every event in his first two-plus seasons at Tech. He had three top 20 finishes in the fall.

Sophomore Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, North Carolina) will play in the fourth position for the Hokies at Mission Inn. Johnson has played in five events this year and has a pair of top 25 finishes so far. Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, will play fifth for the Hokies. He played in seven events as a freshman, and has started in all events this season.

Joining the Hokies at Mission Inn are ACC foe NC State and four other teams from the Commonwealth, Richmond, ODU, VCU and the host Patriots. No. 59 East Carolina is also in the 17-team field. The Hokies are currently ranked 34th in both the Golfstat and the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.

The event will be played on the El Campeón Course at Mission Inn, one of the oldest and most historic courses in the South. Action will begin on Friday with a practice round, with 36 holes being played on Saturday and the final 18 holes on Sunday morning. Live scoring will be available on golfstat.com
