Hokies lead entering final round at VCU

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. The Virginia Tech men’s golf team has a two-round total of 3-over-par 579 and holds a three stroke lead over Maryland entering the final round of the Janney VCU Shootout. The event, hosted by VCU, is being played on the 6,955-yard, par 72 Manakin Course at the Hermitage Country Club outside of Richmond.

The Hokies held a five-stroke lead after Monday morning’s opening round, after carding a 1-under-par 287. Tech followed that with a 4-over-par 292 in the second round. Tech’s 287 in the morning was the only team round under-par in either round on Monday.

Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, is at even-par 144 and is tied for third place, individually. He is in a group of four players that trail leader Nick Voke of Iowa State by two strokes. Cone’s opening round 2-under-par 70 was tied for the second-best individual round of either round on Monday.

Senior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) and junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) are tied for seventh place at 1-over-par 145. Sophomore Joey Lane (Great Falls, Virginia) and Ian Hildebrand, a freshman from Purcellville, Virginia, are tied for 46th place at 154. Hildebrand is making his collegiate debut in the event.

Three Hokies are playing the tournament as individuals. Sophomore Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, North Carolina) is tied for 19th place at 148. Fellow Hokie sophomore Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Virginia) is tied for 46th place with Lane and Hildebrand at 154. Dan Woodbury, a freshman from Upton, Massachusetts who is also making his collegiate debut this week, is in 81st place at 165.

The Hokies, the two time defending champion of the tournament, leads the Terrapins by three strokes and Iowa State by 10 strokes. Radford and host VCU are tied for fourth at 590, James Madison is sixth at 594 and UNCG is seventh at 595. ODU is eighth at 596, Richmond is ninth at 604, Division II power Francis Marion is 10th at 605, Wichita State is 11th at 607, Xavier is 12th at 609 and George Mason is 13th at 619.

The Hokies defeated runner-up Iowa State by 22 strokes to claim last year’s title, setting a new tournament record for margin of victory. Vincent won medalist honors last season, defeating teammate Bryce Chalkley by four strokes. Tech defeated Wichita State by nine strokes and outdistanced Long Beach State by 10 strokes to win the team title in 2012.

The tournament’s final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday morning. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
