Indianapolis, Ind. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team has received an at-large bid to the 2014 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. The Hokies will compete May 15-17, 2014, as the second seed in the Auburn Regional at Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala., hosted by Auburn University.

This will be the Hokies’ eighth consecutive NCAA appearance and their 16th all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship. The Hokies’ second seed at Auburn is the highest seed in school history. Tech was the fifth seed in the Pullman Regional last season.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to represent Virginia Tech in the NCAA Championship again this season,” head coach Jay Hardwick said. “This year’s team has played at a very high level throughout the course of the year and is very deserving on a No. 2 seed. Our program has had great success both as a team and individually.”

The Auburn Regional field should be the strongest of the six regions. It is led by No. 1 national seed and defending national champion Alabama, and also features No. 13 Texas, which won the 2012 national championship by defeating Alabama, host No. 23 Auburn and No. 25 New Mexico. This is the second time the Hokies have played in an NCAA regional at Auburn, as Tech was the 11th seed at the 2003 NCAA East Regional, hosted by Auburn at the Auburn University Club.

Virginia Tech won three events during the regular season and finished in the top five of all of its 10 events this year. Tech finished fourth at the 61st Annual ACC Men’s Golf Championship last week and junior Scott Vincent finished sixth individually. Vincent and fellow junior Trevor Cone currently rank first and second on the Virginia Tech all-time scoring average list. Vincent (10) and Cone (38) join senior teammate Bryce Chalkley (78) among players ranked in the top 100 nationally by Golfstat.com.

The Hokies enter the regionals ranked 12th nationally by Golfstat.com and 14th nationally by the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Virginia Tech is one of six Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the regionals and the only ACC team competing in Auburn.

Alabama is the No. 1 seed in Auburn, followed by the Hokies, Texas, host Auburn and New Mexico. The sixth seed is BYU, followed by Kennesaw State, Colorado, Louisville, UNCG, UC-Davis, Sam Houston State, St. John’s and Alabama State. Seven of the 14 teams in the Auburn field are 2014 conference champions. The Hokies are a combined 7-2 this season against the field in Auburn, with the only losses coming to No. 1 seed Alabama and No. 3 seed Texas.

The Auburn University Club, a Bill Bergin design, was founded in 1999. The course will play as a par-72 and measure 7,254 yards.

There are six regional sites. Three sites, including Auburn, have 14 teams and five individuals, while the other three sites have 13 teams and 10 individuals. The top five teams from each site advance to the NCAA Championship, along with the low individual from each site not on an advancing team. The championship will be played at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kans. May 23-28.
