Hokies struggle day one at ACC Championship
Tech 11th after first round at Old North State Club

Badin Lake, N.C. – Virginia Tech shot an opening round total of 10-over-par 298 and is in 11th place at the 61st Annual ACC Men’s Golf Championship on Friday afternoon. The event is being played at the par-72, 7,102-yard Old North State Club in Badin Lake, N.C.

The Hokies, playing in the final group, fought through rainy and windy conditions in the first round. Tech will have a morning tee time in Saturday’s second round.

Juniors Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) and Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) are tied for 21st place after shooting identical 1-over-par 73s on Friday. Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schneiderjans is the leader after the first round, at 7-under-par 65.

Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 33rd place at 75 and sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) is tied for 53rd place at 77. Freshman Joey Lane (Great Falls, Va.) is tied for 58th place after a 78 in his first-ever ACC Championship round.

Florida State holds the team lead after posting an opening-round, 4-under-par 284, four strokes ahead of Georgia Tech. Clemson is third at 289, Wake Forest is fourth at 290 and Boston College and North Carolina are tied for fifth at 291. NC State and defending champion Duke are tied for seventh at 293 and Notre Dame and Virginia are tied for ninth at 294, four strokes ahead of the Hokies. Maryland is 12th at 299.
