AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot a two-round total of 11-under-par 565 and is in third place after the first two rounds of the 3M Augusta Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The event is being played at the par 72, 7,005-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.

The Hokies held a two-shot lead after Saturday morning’s opening round, shooting an 8-under-par 280. Tech followed that with a 3-under-par 285 in the afternoon. Tech’s morning score of 280 was tied for the second-best round of the first two rounds.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot rounds of 68 and 69 for a 7-under-par 137 and is tied with Greg Eason of UCF for the individual lead. Vincent had nine birdies overall and just a single bogey in each of the day’s two rounds for his 137 total and is the only golfer to post two, sub-70 rounds on Saturday. Vincent enters the tournament with three individuals titles so far this season.

Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.), who has victories in each of the Hokies’ last two events, is eighth overall with a total of 4-under-par 140 and sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) is tied for 21st at 1-under-par 143. Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 39th at 147 and freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) is tied for 53rd at 148.

Texas and UCF are tied for the lead at 12-under-par 564, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Illinois is fourth at 569, four strokes behind Tech. Houston is fifth at 571, Baylor is sixth at 573 and Purdue is seventh at 575. Host GRU Augusta (formerly Augusta State) is eighth at 577, Clemson is ninth at 578, Tennessee is 10th at 579 and New Mexico is 11th at 581. South Carolina and Coastal Carolina are tied for 12th at 584, TCU is 14th at 592 and Division II power USC-Aiken is 15th at 597.

The field for this year’s event boasts three of the nation’s top-ten teams, as ranked by Golfstat.com. Number 7 UCF, No. 8 Houston and No. 9 Illinois join the 13th-ranked Hokies at Augusta. In all, 12 of the 15 teams in the event are ranked in the top 50 nationally.

Tech finished fourth last year in this event. The tournament will be completed with a final 18 holes on Sunday. Competing teams also are allowed to attend the Master’s practice round at Augusta National on Monday morning. Live stats will be available on golfstat.com and hokiesports.com.
