GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot a three-round total of 9-under-par 855 and tied Georgia State for the team title at the Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon. The event was played at the par 72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club outside of Greenville, S.C.

The Hokies shot a 3-under-pat 285 on Friday, followed that with a 5-under-par 283 on Saturday and shot a 1-under-par 287 on Sunday to tie the Panthers for the title. Tech and GSU each shot 287 on Sunday, the only two teams to break par in the final round. This marks the second consecutive Hokie win at Furman and the sixth time in the 45-year history of the event that Tech has won this tournament.

Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) won his second consecutive tournament for the Hokies. Cone shot a final-round 2-under-par 70 on Sunday and claimed a one-stroke victory over J.J. Grey of Georgia State. Cone, who posted rounds of 66-69-70=205 at Furman, made it two in a row, as he had won his first-ever collegiate event two weeks ago at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a three-round total of 2-under-par 214 and finished in seventh place and sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) also finished in the top 10, as he finished with a total of 1-under-par 215 and tied for eighth place. Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) finished in a tie for22nd place at 221 and freshman Joey Lane (Great Falls, Va.), playing in his first event of the spring, tied for 90th at 234. The Hokies made five eagles on Sunday, including three in the last eight holes.

Two Hokies played the tournament as individuals. Freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) is tied for 65th at 228 and freshman Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Va.) is tied for 97th at 238.

The Hokies, the tournament’s defending champion, and Panthers defeated Kennesaw State by seven strokes. Akron was fourth at 875, Elon was fifth at 881, USC Upstate was sixth at 882 and Wofford was seventh at 887. Host Furman finished eighth at 889, Charleston Southern was ninth at 890 and Samford and Temple tied for 10th at 898. In all, 18 teams competed in the three-day event.

The Hokies will have a quick return to the course this week, as they will travel to Augusta, Ga., to compete in the 3M Augusta Invitational at the Forest Hills Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday. The event will once again boast one of the top fields in all of collegiate golf, as four of the current top 10 nationally are scheduled to compete.
