GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team has a two-round total of 8-under-par 568 and are tied with Georgia State after the second round of the Furman Intercollegiate. The event is being played at the par 72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club outside of Greenville, S.C.

The Hokies shot a 3-under-pat 285 on Friday and followed that with a 5-under-par 283 on Saturday. Georgia State shot the low round of the event so far, posting a 7-under-par 281 in the second round, tying the Hokies for the lead. Tech posted the second-lowest round of the day and one of only four rounds under par.

Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) followed his 6-under-par 66 on Friday with a 3-under-par 69 on Saturday and holds a one-shot lead on J.J. Grey of Georgia State. Cone, who began his round on No. 10, was even-par at the turn, but carded three birdies on his second nine for his 69. Cone is looking for his second consecutive tournament victory, as he won his first-ever collegiate event two weeks ago at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) also shot a 69 on Saturday and is tied for 13th at 1-under-par 143. Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) are tied for 19th place 145 and freshman Joey Lane (Great Falls, Va.) is tied for 91st at 155.

Two Hokies are playing the tournament as individuals. Freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) is tied for 61st at 151 and freshman Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Va.) is tied for 97th at 157.

The Hokies, the tournament’s defending champion, and Panthers lead Kennesaw State by two strokes. USC Upstate is fourth at 578, Akron is fifth at 579 and Charleston Southern and Elon are tied for sixth at 585. Western Carolina is eighth at 586, Wofford and host Furman are tied for ninth at 587 and Jacksonville is 11th at 591. Samford is 12th at 592, Marshall is 13th at 593, Temple is 14th at 596, Gardner-Webb is 15th at 597, Winthrop is 16th at 600 and Presbyterian and Division II Francis Marion are tied for 17th at 603.

The final round will be played on Sunday.
