
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot an opening round 3-under-par 285 and holds a two-stroke lead over Georgia State and USC Upstate after the first round of the Furman Intercollegiate on Friday afternoon. The event is being played at the par 72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club outside of Greenville, S.C.
Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) fired a 6-under-par 66 and holds a two-shot lead on J.T. Poston of Western Carolina. Cone posted seven birdies and just one bogey on the afternoon, including five birdies on the back nine. Cone is looking for his second consecutive tournament victory, as he won his first-ever collegiate event two weeks ago at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular.
Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) is tied for 15th place after shooting an even-par 72 and senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 28th at 73. Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 46th at 74 and freshman Joey Lane (Great Falls, Va.) is tied for 83rd after a 77 in his first round of the spring.
Two Hokies are playing the tournament as individuals. Freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) is tied for 60th at 75 and freshman Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Va.) is tied for 83rd at 77. This was also Mondy’s first round of the spring season.
The Hokies, the tournament’s defending champion, leads the Panthers and Spartans by two strokes and holds a three-shot lead on fourth place Kennesaw State. Charleston Southern and Western Carolina are tied for fifth at 289, Jacksonville and Temple are tied for seventh at 292 and Presbyterian and host Furman are tied for ninth at 293. Akron is 12th at 294, Elon and Wofford are tied for 13th at 295, Winthrop is 15th at 296, Samford is 16th at 300, Gardner-Webb is 17th at 302 and Division II Francis Marion is 18th at 308.
The second round of the tournament will begin Saturday morning and the Hokies will be in the morning wave. The final round will be played on Sunday.
