BLACKBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team travels to Greenville, S.C., to defend their 2013 title in the Furman Intercollegiate at the par 72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club. The tournament is one of the oldest and most traditional events in collegiate golf.

The Hokies won last season’s event by 19 strokes, the fourth time in the 44-year history of the tournament. Tech will look to continue its outstanding start to the spring season, which saw the Hokies open with a fifth-place finish at the top-ranked Puerto Rico Classic, followed by a victory at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular two weeks ago.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe), who tied for seventh in last year’s tournament, will play in the first position for Tech. He enters the tournament ranked No. 17 nationally by Golfstat.com and No. 26 by Golfweek/Sagarin. The ACC Player of the Month for September, Vincent won three events during the fall. He tied for 10th at Mission Inn.

Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.), who tied for fourth in last year’s event, will play in the second spot for the Hokies. Chalkley is currently ranked 24th nationally by Golfstat.com and 27th nationally by Golfweek/Sagarin. He finished second to teammate Trevor Cone at Mission Inn. Cone, a junior from Concord, N.C., who tied for 10th at Furman last season, will play third for Tech. He is ranked 42nd nationally by Golfstat.com and 58th by Golfweek/Sagarin, following his first collegiate victory at Mission Inn two weeks ago.

Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) will play in the fourth position for the Hokies. Huge finished in the top 25 in three of the five events in the fall and gutted out a 15th place finish at Mission Inn, battling a hand injury that almost forced him to withdraw from the event. Freshman Joey Lane (Great Falls, Va.) will play fifth for Tech. He played in three of the five fall events and is making his spring debut for the Hokies in this event. Freshmen Drew Johnson (Oak Level, N.C.) and Ryan Monday (Blacksburg, Va.) will play in the tournament as individuals this weekend.

The Hokies are the only ACC team in this week’s 18-team field. Past individual champions of the event include two-time U.S. Open champion Curtis Strange, Brad Faxon, Jay Haas, Mark Calcavecchia, David Duval, Matt Kuchar and the Hokies’ Sean Farrell, Brendon de Jonge and Chris McKeel.

The teams will play a practice round on Thursday. The tournament will be played with 18 holes per day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Live stats will be available on golfstat.com and hokiesports.com.
