HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot a three-round total of 11-over-par 875 this weekend and won the team title in the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Hokie golfer Trevor Cone won medalist honors with a 1-under-par 211, on the par 72, 7,001-yard El Campeon Course at Mission Inn at the historic Mission Inn Resort and Spa.

This is the Hokies’ second win of the season, along with a victory at the VCU Shootout in September. Tech has finished in the top five of all seven events this season. Cone’s individual victory is the team’s fourth of the season, as junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) won three fall events.

The Hokies entered the final round with a seven-stroke lead on Texas Tech and held on to down the Red Raiders by five strokes. Tech shot a 287 and 289 on Saturday and shot 299 on Sunday. The 299 was the second-best round of the final round, which was played in high winds in Central Florida.

Cone, a junior from Concord, N.C., earned his first collegiate win with rounds of 67-73-71=211, bettering teammate Bryce Chalkley and Adam Ball of VCU by two strokes. Chalkley, a senior from Richmond, Va., shot rounds of 71-69-73=213. Cone and Chalkley were tied entering the final round. This is Chalkley’s second, second-place finish of the season and fourth top five finish of the season.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) finished tied for 10th at 225 and sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.), battling a hand injury all weekend, finished tied for 15th at 227. Freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) tied for 65th at 243.

After Virginia Tech and Texas Tech, VCU was third at 897, Bethune-Cookman finished fourth at 915, ODU was fifth at 916 and Florida Atlantic was sixth at 917. Western Kentucky was seventh at 937, Appalachian State was eighth at 941, Connecticut was ninth at 942 and Stetson was 10th at 944. In all, 17 teams competed in the event. George Mason was the tournament host and finished 13th at 954.

The Hokies return to action in two weeks, as they compete in the Furman Intercollegiate at the Furman Golf Course in Greenville, S.C. on March 28-30.
