Rio Grande, P.R. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot a three-round total of nine-under-par 855 and finished in fifth place at the Puerto Rico Classic on Tuesday. The event was played at the par 72, 6,945-yard River Course at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

Tech shot 289 in Sunday’s first round, followed by a four-under-par 284 on Monday. The Hokies shot a six-under-par 282 in Tuesday’s final round, tied for the fourth-best round of the day. Tech was seventh after the opening round, improved to sixth place after 36 holes and improved on the final day to finish fifth overall.

Juniors Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) shot four-under-par 212 and tied for 16th place individually. The Hokie duo finished eight strokes behind co-medalists Miller Capps of Clemson and Robby Shelton of Alabama. Cone and Vincent each shot one-under-par 71s on Tuesday. Vincent finished under-par in all three rounds in the tournament.

Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) finished in 29th place with a total of one-under-par 215. Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) a 67 on Tuesday to finish with an even-par 216, good for a tie of 30th place. Freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) finished in a tie for 67th place at 227.

Top-ranked Alabama led all three rounds and won its fourth consecutive Puerto Rico Classic with a three-day total of 45-under-par 274, four strokes better than Georgia Tech. Georgia was third at 835 and Clemson was fourth at 847, eight strokes ahead of the Hokies. Oklahoma, Michigan and host Purdue tied for sixth at 859 and SMU, East Tennessee State and UNC Greensboro finished in a tie for ninth at 868. Northwestern was 13th at 875, North Carolina was 14th at 890 and NC State finished 15th at 897.

The field for this year’s event boasted five of the nation’s top ten teams, as ranked by Golfstat.com. Top-ranked and now four-time defending champion Alabama, No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 7 Georgia and No. 10 Oklahoma joined the ninth-ranked Hokies. Five more teams ranked in the top 50 were also in the 15-team tournament. The Hokies were one of five ACC teams that competed in Puerto Rico.

The Hokies return to action on March 15 and 16, when they compete in the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular at the Las Colinas Course of the Mission Inn Resort and Spa in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
