RIO GRANDE, P.R. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot four-under-par 284 in Monday’s second round and improved to sixth place with a two-round score of three-under-par 573 at the Puerto Rico Classic. The event is being played at the par 72, 6,945-yard River Course at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The Hokies entered the second round on Monday in seventh place, after shooting a 289 on Sunday.

Juniors Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C. and Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) are tied for 13th place individually with identical three-under-par 141s. They trail the leader, Robby Shelton of Alabama by 10 strokes. Vincent shot a two-under-par 70 on Monday, while Cone posted the Hokies’ best round of the tournament so far, a five-under-par 67, including six birdies and just one bogey.

Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) is tied for 20th place with a two-under-par 142 and senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 52nd place at 149. Freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) is in 69th place at 154

Top-ranked Alabama. the three-time defending champion in the event, shot 16-under-par 272 on Monday and leads the event with a two-day total of 31-under-par 545, 10 strokes ahead of Georgia Tech. Georgia is third at 559, Clemson is fourth at 563 and host Purdue is fifth at 571, two strokes ahead of the Hokies.

Oklahoma is seventh at 577, Missouri is eighth at 578, Michigan is ninth at 579 and East Tennessee State and UNC Greensboro are tied for 10th at 581. SMU is 12th at 586, NC State is 13th at 589, Northwestern is 14th at 593 and North Carolina is 15th at 596.

The field for this year’s event boasts five of the nation’s top ten teams, as ranked by Golfstat.com. Top-ranked and three-time defending champion Alabama, No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 7 Georgia and No. 10 Oklahoma join the ninth-ranked Hokies. Five more teams ranked in the top 50 are also in the 15-team tournament. The Hokies are one of five ACC teams competing in Puerto Rico.
