Rio Grande, P.R. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot an opening round one-over-par 289 on Sunday and is in seventh place at the Puerto Rico Classic. The event is being played at the par 72, 6,945-yard River Course at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) shot a two-under-par 70 and is tied for 10th place overall. Huge carded six birdies and four bogeys on Sunday morning and is four strokes behind leader Adam Schenk of host Purdue.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 17th place at one-under-par 71 and senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) and junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) are tied for 42nd place at 74. Freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) shot a 78 and is tied for 68th place.

Top-ranked Alabama jumped out to the lead with a 15-under-par 273, five strokes ahead of Georgia and Georgia Tech. Host Purdue is fourth at 281, Michigan is fifth at 285 and Clemson is sixth at 287, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. SMU is eighth at 290, Missouri and Northwestern are tied for ninth at 292 and Oklahoma and North Carolina are tied for 11th at 295. NC State and UNCG are tied for 13th at 296 and East Tennessee State is 15th at 298.

The field for this year’s event boasts five of the nation’s top ten teams, as ranked by Golfstat.com. Top-ranked and three-time defending champion Alabama, No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 7 Georgia and No. 10 Oklahoma join the ninth-ranked Hokies. Five more teams ranked in the top 50 are also in the 15-team tournament. The Hokies are one of five ACC teams competing in Puerto Rico.

The second round will start at 8 a.m. on Monday morning, followed by the final round with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday morning. Live stats are available on golfstat.com and hokiesports.com
