
BLACKBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team wraps up the fall portion of the 2013-14 schedule this weekend, as they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to compete in the UNCG Bridgestone Invitational. The event will be played at the par 72, 7,245-yard Grandover Resort. Tech has a first, two seconds and a third place finish in its four events so far this season.
The event will have a field that includes four teams ranked in the top 50 nationally, led by the Hokies at No. 10 in both the Golfstat.com and Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Joining Tech in the top 50 of both polls are No. 30/30 Iowa State, No. 33/32 Memphis and No. 31/44 Purdue. Also in the field are host UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Georgia State, High Point, Mississippi State, UNC, NC State, VCU, Washington State and William & Mary.
Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe), winner of the three of the first four events of the season, will play in the first position for Tech. Vincent enters the tournament ranked No. 2 nationally by Golfstat.com and No. 6 nationally by Golfweek/Sagarin. The ACC Player of the Month for September, Vincent won the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate two weeks ago. He enters the weekend with a 68.92 stroke average, including a 68.00 in “Crunch Time”, signifying the final round of tournaments.
Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) will play in the second spot for the Hokies. Chalkley, currently ranked 27th nationally by Golfstat.com and 44th nationally by Golfweek/Sagarin, finished second to Vincent at the VCU Shootout and followed that with a tie for ninth at Brickyard. At the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, Chalkley finished fifth individually. Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) will play third for Tech. He finished fourth at VCU, 16th at Brickyard and 14th at BOT Intercollegiate two weeks ago. He is ranked 89th nationally by Golfstat.com and 117th by Golfweek/Sagarin.
Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) will play in the fourth position for the Hokies. Huge has finished in the top 25 in three of the four events this season. Freshman Joey Lane (Great Falls, Va.) will play fifth for Tech again this week. Lane made his debut in the starting line-up for the Hokies in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, finishing 51st overall. Freshman Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Va.) will play in the tournament as an individual and not count towards Tech’s team totals.
The Hokies tied for fourth last year at the UNCG Bridgestone Invitational and Vincent tied for sixth individually. The teams will play a practice round on Friday morning. The first two rounds will be played Saturday and the final round will take place Sunday. Live stats will be available on golfstat.com and hokiesports.com.
