MACON, Ga. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot an opening round 5-under-par 283 on Friday and is in second place at the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship. The event is being played at the par 72, 7,128-yard Brickyard at Riverside Golf Course this weekend. The Hokies trail the leader, No. 3 Georgia Tech, by one stroke.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) and sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) each shot a 2-under-par 70 on Friday and are tied for seventh place. Keith Mitchell of Georgia, who is playing the event as an individual, leads the field after an opening round 7-under-par 65.

Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is tied for 13th place at 71 and senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 18th place at even-par 72. Freshman Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Va.) is tied for 33rd place at 74.

Host Mercer is in third place at 284, two strokes behind the Yellow Jackets and one stroke behind the Hokies. South Florida is fourth at 286, Louisville is fifth at 289 and top-ranked Georgia and Florida State are tied for sixth at 291. GRU Augusta, formerly known as Augusta State, is eighth at 293 and Furman and Georgia State are tied for ninth at 294. Chattanooga is 11th at 300, Boston College is 12th at 307, Princeton is 13th at 310 and Gonzaga is 14th at 313.

The Brickyard annually boasts one of the top fields in collegiate golf. This season, two of the top three teams in the current Golfstat.com poll, No. 1 Georgia and No. 3 Georgia Tech, are joined by five more teams ranked in the top 50. Additionally, five of the top 20 players in the country will tee it up this weekend in Macon, including Vincent. Six of the top 50 teams in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll will compete at Brickyard. A seventh top-50 team, the Air Force Academy, ranked 48th and 49th in the two polls, respectively, was scheduled to compete but had to withdraw, due to the shutdown of the federal government.

The teams will play the second round on Saturday and the final round will take place Sunday. Tech will be grouped with Georgia Tech and Mercer on Saturday, teeing off on the first tee at 8:30 a.m. Live stats are available on golfstat.com and hokiesports.com.
