BLACKBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team hopes to continue its strong start to the 2013-14 schedule this weekend, as they travel to Macon, Ga., to compete in the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship. The event will be played at the par 72, 7,128-yard Brickyard at Riverside Golf Course.

The Brickyard annually boasts one of the top fields in collegiate golf. This season, two of the top three teams in the current Golfstat.com poll, No. 1 Georgia and No. 3 Georgia Tech, will be joined by five more teams ranked in the top 50. Additionally, five of the top 20 players in the country will tee it up this weekend in Macon, including Hokie junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe).

Six of the top 50 teams in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll will compete at Brickyard. The Hokies, currently ranked 11th in Golfstat.com and 14th in Golfweek/Sagarin, will be joined by the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets, along with Florida State (36/23), GRU Augusta (33/13) and South Florida (28/27). Other teams competing in the tournament are Boston College, Chattanooga, Furman, Georgia State, Gonzaga, Louisville, Princeton and the host Mercer Bears. A seventh top 50 team, the Air Force Academy, ranked 48th and 49th in the two polls, respectively, is scheduled to compete but may be required to withdraw, due to the shutdown of the federal government.

Vincent, winner of the first two events of the season, will play in the first position for Tech. The ACC Player of the Month for September, Vincent is ranked 18th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. He enters the weekend with a 69.33 stroke average, including a remarkable 66.50 in “Crunch Time”. This was the one event that Vincent missed last season, as he was representing his native Zimbabwe in the World Team Amateur Championship in Turkey.

Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) will play in the second spot for the Hokies. Chalkley, currently ranked 88th nationally, finished second to Vincent at the VCU Shootout last week. Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) will play third for Tech. He finished fourth at VCU.

Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) will play in the fourth position for the Hokies. Huge has placed in the top 20 individually in each of the first two events this season. Freshman Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Va.) will once again play fifth for Tech. He made his collegiate debut last week at VCU and finished 25th overall, highlighted by a final round 2-under-par 70.

The teams will play a practice round on Thursday and then begin tournament play on Friday morning. The second round will be played Saturday and the final round will take place Sunday. Live stats will be available on golfstat.com and hokiesports.com.
