Hokies lead entering final round at VCU

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team recorded a two-round total of 9-under-par 567 and leads the VCU Shootout on Monday afternoon. The event is being played on the par 72, 6,955-yard Manakin course at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va.

The Hokies shot a 1-under-par 287 in the morning round and trailed Iowa State by five strokes. In the afternoon session, the Hokies fired a 8-under-par 280 and surpassed the Cyclones to take a two stroke lead into Tuesday’s final round. Tech is the defending champion in the event.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe), who won last week’s tournament in Iowa, leads the VCU Shootout with a two round total of 7-under-par 137. He is four strokes ahead of a trio in second place which includes teammate senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.).

Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) is tied for 11th place with an even-par 144 and junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is tied for 22nd place at 146. Freshman Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Va.), making his collegiate debut, is tied for 39th place at 148.

Three Hokies are playing the event as individuals. Freshman Joey Lane (Great Falls, Va.) is tied for 61st place at 156 and freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) and junior Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.) are tied for 63rd place at 157.

The Hokies lead the Cyclones by two strokes and Richmond by 13 strokes. Radford is fourth at 582, Old Dominion and host VCU are tied for fifth at 586 and Maryland is seventh at 590. UNC Greensboro is eighth at 594, James Madison is ninth at 595, Central Connecticut State is 10th at 613, George Mason is 11th at 614 and George Washington is 12th at 631.

The final round will take place on Tuesday, with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start. Live stats are available on golfstat.com.
