BLACKBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team will continue its strong start to the 2013-14 schedule on Monday and Tuesday, as they travel to the Richmond area to compete in the VCU Shootout. The event will be played on the par 72, 6,955-yard Manakin course at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va.

The Hokies will be aiming to defend the title they won last season. Tech returns four of the five players out of that line-up, including junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) who finished tied for fifth individually. Virginia Tech won the event by nine strokes.

Vincent enters the event less than a week since he recorded his first career collegiate victory, at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Iowa. He will play in the No. 1 spot for the Hokies. Vincent, an All-ACC and All-East Region selection as a sophomore, shot an 8-under-par 64 in the final round on Tuesday, setting a new tournament and personal low round.

Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) will play out of the second position for Tech. Chalkley finished strong in Iowa last week, shooting a final round 67, also marking his low collegiate round. Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) will play third for Tech. Huge and Chalkley tied for 13th overall in Iowa and were the top two finishers for the Hokies in the NCAA Pullman Regional last May.

Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) will play fourth for the Hokies. Tech will welcome one newcomer to the line-up, as Ryan Mondy, a freshman from Blacksburg, Va., will make his collegiate debut at VCU. Mondy, while not playing in Tech’s line-up in Iowa, had a successful weekend all the same, as he won the Allegheny Amateur.

Tech will also travel three players who will compete as individuals in the event: junior Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.), Drew Johnson, a freshman from Oak Ridge, N.C. and Joey Lane, a freshman from Great Falls, Va.). Curley will be making his season debut. Johnson played in the Tech line-up last week in Iowa, but Lane, who is coming off a wrist injury, will be making his collegiate debut.

The 12-team field will consist of Central Connecticut State, George Mason, George Washington, James Madison, Iowa State, Maryland, Old Dominion, Radford, Richmond, UNC Greensboro, host VCU and the Hokies. Tech will play a practice round on Sunday before tournament play begins with 36 holes of play on Monday morning, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. The final round will take place on Tuesday, with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.
