BURLINGTON, Iowa – Virginia Tech golfer Scott Vincent tied a school record with a round of 8-under-par 64 on Tuesday, claiming co-medalist honors at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, played at the par 72, 7,301-yard Spirit Hollow Golf Club in Burlington, Iowa. The Hokies shot a tournament-best-tying 10-under-par 278 in Tuesday’s final round and finished in second place in the annual event, with a total of three-under-par 861.

The Hokies were in fourth place after each of the first two rounds, but shot the best round of the day by six strokes, thanks in large part to Vincent’s 64. Vincent, a junior from Harare, Zimbabwe, tied with Stewart Jolly of LSU for the low total in the tournament. By virtue of having the low round on Tuesday, Vincent will receive the champion’s trophy. The 64 is tied for the low round in school history. Current PGA Tour member Johnson Wagner shot a 64 in the opening round of the 2002 Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championship in Aiken, S.C.

Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) finished tied for 13th place at even-par 216. Chalkley shot a final round 5-under-par 67 on Tuesday, his lowest round as a collegian. Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) wsa tied for 27th place at 219 and freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) was tied for 59th place at 230.

Oklahoma shot a three-round total of seven-under-par 857 and defeated the Hokies by four strokes. Houston was third at 866, New Mexico was fourth at 867, LSU was fifth at 872 and host Iowa and Winthrop tied for sixth place at 875. Central Arkansas was eighth at 876, Jacksonville State was ninth at 881, Arizona was 10th at 892 and Florida Gulf Coast and Chattanooga tied for 11th at 895. Ball State finished in 13th place at 896, Texas State was 14th at 898 and Louisiana Tech was 15th at 911.

The event was the Hokies’ first of the season. Tech returns to action next Monday and Tuesday, as it looks to defend its title at the VCU Shootout. The tournament will by played at the Hermitage Country Club’s Manakin course.
