Hokies fourth entering final round in Iowa

BURLINGTON, Iowa -- Virginia Tech has a two-round total of seven-over-par 583 and is in fourth place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. The event is being played at the par 72, 7,301-yard Spirit Hollow Golf Club in Burlington, Iowa. Tech shot an opening round 292 on Sunday and followed that with a second round 291 on Monday.

Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) and sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) are tied for 11th place individually at 144 to lead the Hokies. Cone shot his second straight even-par 72 on Monday and Huge posted Tech’s best round of Monday with a one-under-par 71. They are three strokes behind the four co-leaders, Tyler Merkel of Ball State, Stewart Jolly of LSU, James Newton of Central Arkansas and Beau Titsworth of Oklahoma.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 21st place at 146 and senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 36th at 149. Freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) is tied for 46th at 152.

Oklahoma shot the only-sub par round of the day, a 10-under-par 278 and leads first round leader Houston by 13 strokes. New Mexico is third at 582, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Jacksonville State, Winthrop, LSU and Central Arkansas are tied for fifth place at 588, host Iowa is ninth at 589 and Arizona is 10th at 595. Florida Gulf Coast is 11th at 596, Chattanooga is 12th at 602, Ball State is 13th at 605, Texas State is 14th at 609 and Louisiana Tech is 15th at 611.

The event boasts a field representing the top conferences in collegiate golf. Along with the Hokies, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Houston, Chattanooga, LSU and Ball State competed in the 2013 NCAA regionals. New Mexico, Oklahoma, LSU and Ball State advanced to the 2013 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship in Atlanta last season. The final round will be played on Tuesday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
