Hokies open 2013-14 men’s golf season in Iowa
Tech represents ACC in Golfweek Conference Challenge

BLACKBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team will open the 2013-14 schedule at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in Burlington, Iowa. The event will be played on the par 72, 7,301-yard Spirit Hollow Golf Club.

The event boasts a field comprised of representatives from 15 of the major collegiate conferences. Along with the Hokies, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Houston, Chattanooga, LSU and Ball State competed in the 2013 NCAA regionals. New Mexico, Oklahoma, LSU and Ball State advanced to the 2013 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship in Atlanta last season. LSU (9th), New Mexico (14th), Houston (17th) and Oklahoma (19th) are all ranked in the 2013-14 Golfweek Preview poll.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) will play in the No. 1 spot for the Hokies. Vincent, an All-ACC and All-East Region selection as a sophomore, led the Hokies in scoring and “Crunch Time” average last season. He had nine top 20 finishes in his 11 events last season, including five top five finishes.

Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) will play out of the second position for Tech. Chalkley played in every event as a junior and was third on the team in scoring and “Crunch Time” average last season. Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) will play third for the Hokies, giving Tech an experienced group in the top three positions.

Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) will play fourth for Tech. Huge played every event for the Hokies last season as a freshman, garnering four top 20 finishes. Huge and Chalkley tied for 11th overall to lead the Hokies at the 2013 NCAA Pullman Regional last May. The lone newcomer to the Tech line-up will be Drew Johnson, a freshman from Oak Ridge, N.C. Johnson had a strong summer leading into the season and is expected to be a solid contributor this season.

This will be the Hokies’ first ever invitation to the event. Tech will play a practice round on Sunday, before tournament play begins with single rounds on Sunday and Monday morning, beginning at 9 a.m. CDT. The final round will take place on Tuesday, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CDT. Live stats are available on golfstat.com.
