NEWTON, Mass. – Virginia Tech golfer Trevor Cone shot a two-round total of 10-over-par 150 and finished in a tie for 162^nd place at the 2013 U.S. Amateur Championship. The event is being played at the 7,310-yard, par 70, The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. There was also play at the 6,547-yard, par 70 Charles River Country Club in nearby Newton, Mass., during stroke play.

Cone, a rising junior from Concord, N.C., shot a 78 in Monday’s first round at The Country Club and followed that with a 72 at Charles River on Tuesday morning. Cone qualified for the championship when he won co-medalist honors at sectional qualifying in July at the Country Club of Whispering Pines’ East Course in Southern Pines, N.C.

The field of 312 competitors played 18 holes of stroke play on both Monday and Tuesday before the top 64 players advanced to six rounds of match play, beginning on Wednesday. The event will conclude with a 36-hole championship match.

This is the sixth time that The Country Club has hosted the U.S. Amateur. The last time the course played host to the event was 1982, when Jay Sigel won the championship. The club has also hosted three U.S. Women’s Amateurs and three U.S. Opens.
