Cone falls at Public Links Championship
Rising junior loses 2 & 1 to Ian Davis in the round of 32

LORTON, Va. – Virginia Tech golfer Trevor Cone lost his second match in match play, at the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, being played at the Laurel Hills Golf Club in Lorton, Va. on Thursday

Cone a rising junior from Concord, N.C., lost to Ian Davis, an Oklahoma State golfer from Edmond, Okla., 2 & 1 in the round of 32 on Thursday morning. Cone birdied the first hole to take a quick lead, but Davis squared the match on No. 2 and took a lead he would never relinquish with a par on the par 4, 500-yard No. 5. Cone never trailed by more than two holes, but when each player birdied the par 4, 489-yard No. 17, Davis claimed the 2 & 1 victory.

Cone advanced to match play by shooting back-to-back one-over-par 71 in the two stroke play rounds, to finish in a tie for 26th place. He won his match in the round of 64 before falling to Davis. The top 64 golfers advanced to match play.
