Cone advances at Public Links Championship
Rising junior on to the round of 32
U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship Match Play Bracket

LORTON, Va. – Virginia Tech golfer Trevor Cone won his opening match in match play on Wednesday, at the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, being played at the Laurel Hills Golf Club in Lorton, Va.

Cone a rising junior from Concord, N.C., defeated Mark Cusic of California, Md., 4 & 2 to advance on to the round of 32 on Thursday morning. Cone birdied the 179-yard par 3 fourth hole to take a one up lead that he never relinquished. Cone took a three up lead with a par on the 610-yard, par 5 15th hole and then birdied the 179-yard, par 3 16th hole to win the match.

Cone advanced to match play by shooting back-to-back one-over-par 71 in the two stroke play rounds, to finish in a tie for 26th place. The top 64 golfers advanced to match play.

The 31st seed in match play, Cone will play second seed Ian Davis of Edmond, Okla., at 8:20 p.m., on Thursday morning in the round of 32. The winner of that match will advance to the round of 16 on Thursday afternoon.
