
BLACKSBURG, VA. – Virginia Tech head men’s golf coach Jay Hardwick has been named Coach of the Year by the Virginia State Golf Coaches Association. The All-State First Team consists of Chase Marinell (Liberty), Denny McCarthy (Virginia), Mikey Moyers (Virginia Tech), Scott Vincent (Virginia Tech), and Daniel Walker (Richmond).
Virginia Tech finished fourth or better eight times in ten events during the 2012-13 regular season, including victories in the Marshall Invitational, VCU Shootout and the Furman Intercollegiate. The Hokies finished second in the ACC Championship and received an at-large selection to the NCAA Regional in Pullman, Wash., where they finished tenth. Virginia Tech was ranked #35 by Golfstat.com and #36 by Golfweek/Sagarin at the end of the season.
Liberty junior Chase Marinell (Fort Myers, Fla.) led the Flames with a 72.74 scoring average and posted 6 top 10 finishes in twelve events. Marinell was named to the Big South All-Conference Team and the GCAA All-East Region Team. Virginia sophomore Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) was named an honorable mention selection to the 2013 PING All-America Team, in addition to earning All-ACC and All-East Region honors. McCarthy finished second individually in the NCAA Regional in Columbus, Ohio to advance to the NCAA Championship, where he finished 22nd.
Virginia Tech senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) posted six top 10 finishes in twelve events, including a second place finish at the ACC Championship. Moyers was second for the Hokies in scoring with a 72.0 scoring average and earned All-ACC and All-East Region honors. Virginia Tech sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) had eight top 10 finishes in eleven events and compiled a team-best 71.66 scoring average for the season. Vincent joined McCarthy and Moyers on the All-ACC team and also earned All-East Region honors.
University of Richmond senior Daniel Walker (Earlysville, Va.) advanced as an individual to the NCAA Championship following a runner-up performance at the NCAA Regional in Tallahasse, Fla. Walker posted a school record 72.26 scoring average for the season and had six top 10 finishes in ten events. He was also named to the GCAA All-East Region Team and the Atlantic-10 All-Conference Team.
The All-State Second Team consists of Bryce Chalkley and Trevor Cone of Virginia Tech, Weston Eklund of Radford, and Mathieu Fenasse and Niklas Lindstrom of Liberty.
