Hokies tie for 10th at NCAA Pullman Regional
Chalkley and Huge tie for 11th individually

PULLMAN, Wash. – Virginia Tech shot a three-day total of three-under-par 861 and tied with Baylor for 10th place at the NCAA Pullman Regional on Saturday afternoon. The event was played at the par-72, 7,308-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Course on the campus of Washington State University.

The Hokies shot an 11-under-par 277 in Thursday’s first round and followed that with an even-par 288 in the second round, played Friday. Tech shot an eight-over-par 296 in Saturday’s final round.

Junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond Va.) and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) each shot a five-under-par 211 and finished in a tie for 11th place individually. They finished nine strokes behind co-medalist Sam Smith of Southern California and Michael Weaver of California. The Hokie duo also finished two strokes behind Rodolfo Cazaubon of North Texas, who advanced to the NCAA Championship by virtue of being the lowest scoring individual from a non-advancing team.

Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) tied for 49th place at 219. Sophomores Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) tied for 64th at 225.

National top-seed California won the regional with a score of 43-under-par 821, 20 strokes ahead of runner-up TCU and 21 strokes ahead of third place St. Mary’s (Ca.). Southern California was fourth at 845, 11 strokes ahead of Ball State and San Diego State. Pacific was seventh at 858, BYU was eighth at 859 and Memphis was ninth at 860, one stroke ahead of the Hokies and Bears. North Texas was 12th at 865, Princeton was 13th at 879 and St. Francis (Pa.) finished 14th at 927.

The top five teams and the top individual not from an advancing team advanced to the 2013 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, to be played at the Capital City Club’s Crabapple course in Atlanta, Ga., May 28 – June 2. Ball State defeated San Diego State in a playoff to break the fifth place tie and advance to Atlanta.
