Hokies tied for seventh entering final round at NCAA Pullman Regional

PULLMAN, Wash. – Virginia Tech has a two-day total of 11-under-par 565 and is tied with Ball State for seventh place at the NCAA Pullman Regional on Friday afternoon. The event is being played at the par-72, 7,308-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Course on the campus of Washington State University.

The Hokies shot an 11-under-par 277 in Thursday’s first round and followed that with an even-par 288 in the second round, played Friday. Tech was one of five teams to shoot par-or-better in both of the first two rounds.

Junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond Va.) shot a second consecutive three-under-par 69 and is tied for eighth place at 138. He trails leader Sam Smith of Southern California by 12 strokes.

Freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) shot a four-under-par 68 on Friday and is tied for 12th place a 139. Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) is tied for 29th place at 142 and sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 49th at 146. Sophomore Trevor Cone is tied for 66th at 151. Huge’s 68 on Friday is tied for the low round of the tournament by a Hokie.

National top-seed California leads entering the final round at 35-under-par 541, nine strokes ahead of Southern California and 16 strokes ahead of St. Mary’s (Ca.). TCU is fourth at 561, two strokes ahead of San Diego State and Pacific and four strokes ahead of the Hokies and Cardinals. BYU is ninth at 573, Baylor is 10th at 574, Memphis is 11th at 575, North Texas is 12th at 577, Princeton is 13th at 589 and St. Francis (Pa.) is 14th at 614.

The final round will tee off Saturday morning. The Hokies will be grouped with Ball State and BYU. The group will tee off from the 10th tee, beginning at 7:30 a.m. PDT.

The top five teams and the top individual not from an advancing team will advance to the 2013 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, to be played at the Capital City Club’s Crabapple course in Atlanta, Ga., May 28 – June 2.
