PULLMAN, Wash. – Virginia Tech shot a first round 11-under-par 277 and is tied with North Texas for eighth place at the NCAA Pullman Regional on Thursday afternoon. The event is being played at the par-72, 7,308-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Course on the campus of Washington State University.
Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) shot a four-under-par 68 and is tied for 18th place individually. He trails leader Sam Smith of Southern California by six strokes. Smith’s 62 set a new course record at Palouse Ridge. Moyers carded six birdies and two bogeys in the round.
Junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) each shot three-under-par 69 and are tied for 25th place. Freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) shot one-under-par 71 in his first-ever NCAA round and is tied for 36th place overall. Sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) shot even-par 72 and is tied for 49th.
National top-seed California leads the regional with a 23-under-par 265, two strokes ahead of St. Mary’s and three strokes ahead of San Diego State. Southern California is fourth at 272, Pacific is fifth at 274 and TCU and Memphis are tied for sixth at 276, one stroke ahead of the Hokies and the Mean Green. Ball State is 10th at 281, BYU is 11th at 282, Baylor is 12th at 289, Princeton is 13th at 292 and St. Francis (Pa.) is 14th at 300.
The second round will tee off Friday morning. The Hokies will begin at 8:00 a.m. PDT from the 10th tee, grouped with Memphis and North Texas.
The top five teams and the top individual not from an advancing team will advance to the 2013 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, to be played at the Capital City Club’s Crabapple course in Atlanta, Ga., May 28 – June 2.
